Volunteer Fire Department

The Hyattstown Volunteer Fire Department was founded on May 21, 1929, by the citizens of the community.  Upon formation of the Department President Webster V. Burdette was elected as president, and W. Loyd Burdette was elected as Fire Chief.

In 1929, the first piece of equipment, a Model "T" Ford pumper, was purchased from the Kensington Volunteer Fire Department for $300. Six months later an old International chemical truck was acquired from Silver Spring Fire Department for $400, and in 1930, bought a new Brockway pumper

Although continuous fund raising projects were immediately implemented by the Department, some members stood personally responsible for the funds needed to purchase the first equipment and hoses. The equipment was kept outside during the first year while the members built their first fire station, which still stands. (see group picture)

In 1930, the Hyattstown Volunteer Fire Department joined the Maryland State Firemen’s Association and the Montgomery County Volunteer Firemen’s Association (name changed in 1988 to The Montgomery County Volunteer Fire-Rescue Association). These two organizations serve as a resource to assist the volunteer departments to effectively maintain the interests of the fire, rescue and emergency services organizations in our County and State. (See msaf.org and mcvfra.org for further information on these organizations.)
