Auxiliary:
On
October 14, 1946, Mrs. Gladys Carlton welcomed ten
ladies into her home, located on Hyattstown Mill Road,
to establish a Ladies’ Auxiliary to the Hyattstown
Volunteer Fire Department.
The charter members were Maude Burdette, Annie
Nicholson, Hazel Price and Lilly Stone.
We have not located the minutes of these early
meetings.
The
Preamble and Constitution these ladies wrote for this
new auxiliary remain as written except the word
"ladies" and other gender wording were deleted
in 1983. The
Preamble, Constitution, and a portion of the Membership
Section of the Bylaws are quoted as follows:
Whereas,
it was deemed advisable to organize an Auxiliary to
the local organization of Volunteer Firemen of the
town of Hyattstown, Maryland, said Auxiliary to be
composed of citizens of the community, a meeting was
held in the home of Mrs. Gladys Carlton, October 14,
1946.
Section
1. The
purpose and objects for which this Auxiliary is formed
are to aid the Hyattstown Volunteer Fire Department,
Incorporated, through these means, by assisting in the
proper equipment and care of its properties, by
endeavoring to uphold and preserve the integrity and
morale of its members; and further by other means which
may develop from time to time and which may be in the
interests of the said Department, thereby contributing
to the general welfare of the community as a whole.
Section
2.
In order to accomplish these objects and
purposes, the Auxiliary, among other things, reserves
the right of full jurisdiction over such funds as may
come into its possession; to accept and receive gifts,
donations, and bequests contributing to its general
welfare and to that of the Department of which it is an
Auxiliary.
